Catoosa, a Cherokee word (Gha-too-see) meaning "a hill," is double-countied. Most of Catoosa is in Rogers County, but the southern part is in Wagoner County. Located in Green Country, northeast Oklahoma.
Catoosa is just off Route 66, about 10 miles northeast of Tulsa. Catoosa became a cow town after the railroad came, in 1882. The population grew along with the cattlemen's success. William Halsell, of the Bird Creek Ranch, was one of the area cattlemen. John Schrimsher was Catoosa's first postmaster when the Post Office opened in 1883. The population reached 240 by 1900. According to the census of 2020, Catoosa's population was 7,930.
My ancestors were among the first to settle here after the "Trail of Tears" around 1839, and many of my relatives are still around here today. One of my relatives, known as "The Cherokee Kid," America's Favorite Indian Cowboy, Will Rogers.
